Bahrain Work Permit: LMRA Checks Before You Travel

Gulf Talent Guide | Published 16 October 2026 | Official sources last checked 16 October 2026

In Bahrain, your employer arranges your work permit through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA). The LMRA says an expatriate worker must hold the official permit before arriving, that working on a visit visa is prohibited, and that a worker must not give money or benefits to an employer for issuing or renewing a permit. Check these points before you resign, pay anyone or book a ticket.

This guide is for Indian job seekers with a Bahrain offer. It uses official LMRA pages and explains what you can verify yourself. It is general information, not legal advice.

1. How the work permit process works

The employer applies on the LMRA’s Expatriate Management System. According to the LMRA’s New Work Permit service page (last updated 8 July 2026), the employer chooses a permit period that should match the period in your employment contract. After approval and payment, the employer prints the work permit. If you are outside Bahrain, the residence permit is printed through the national portal once you arrive.

The same page lists 21 working days for applications for workers outside Bahrain. Treat that as an official estimate, not a promise. Do not resign from your current job until your permit is approved and your travel date is confirmed in writing.

2. Checks before you resign or travel

  • Ask for the employer’s legal name and commercial registration details, and confirm them independently.
  • Ask for written confirmation that a work permit application has been made in your name and what it states about your job and permit period.
  • Compare the job title, salary and contract period in the offer, the contract and the permit.
  • Check whether your occupation needs an approval letter from another authority. The LMRA page gives teachers, doctors, engineers and some banking roles as examples.
  • Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months. The LMRA says a validity of at least 2 years is highly recommended.
  • Do not travel on a visit visa to “start work and fix the permit later”.

3. Who pays for the permit?

In a 2022 statement, the LMRA said the law requires the employer to bear all fees imposed on the worker, including health insurance costs, and prohibits a worker from paying money or benefits to the employer for issuing or renewing a permit. If someone asks you to pay for your permit, stop and verify before you send money. Read our guide on how to verify a Gulf recruitment agent in India.

4. The medical test comes first

For a worker outside Bahrain, the LMRA requires a medical report from a health centre accredited by the Gulf Health Council (Wafid), as listed on its authorised health centres page. The report must not be older than two months and the result must be fit. Where no accredited centre exists in your city or country, the LMRA allows a non-Wafid form stamped by an official medical centre.

The LMRA also states that the employer must process deportation if a worker fails the required medical examination. So keep your current job and savings safe until you are medically cleared and your permit is approved.

5. After you arrive

  • Give the LMRA your biometric data within one month of first entering Bahrain.
  • Work only at the place shown on the permit, or at another branch of the same employer doing the same activity.
  • If you change employer, the LMRA advises stopping work for the current employer until the transfer is complete and a new permit is issued under the new employer.
  • Use the LMRA’s expatriate employee services to check your permit status, as the national portal says workers can verify permit validity, duration and contract details there.

6. How your salary should be paid

The LMRA runs a Wage Protection System (WPS 2.0) that lets employers transfer wages through a documented process. EY reports that the LMRA announced on 21 October 2025 that an enhanced WPS becomes mandatory for private-sector employers from February 2026, with salaries routed through the LMRA portal (EY Tax News).

Before you join, ask how and when salary will be paid, and keep your contract, payslips and bank statements. If your wages are late, collect the evidence and contact the LMRA support channels below.

7. Warning signs

  • A guaranteed Bahrain visa in return for a fee, especially to a personal account.
  • An agent who tells you to enter on a visit visa and work.
  • No written offer, or a job title or salary that changes between documents.
  • A request to hand over your original passport or certificates without a clear reason.

A warning sign is not proof of fraud. It is a reason to pause and verify. Our Gulf job documents checklist and contract checklist can help you prepare.

8. Where to get help

The LMRA’s Expat Protection Centre offers assistance, guidance and legal counselling to expatriate workers. The LMRA contact centre number on its pages is +973 17506055. In 2022 the LMRA also named a 24-hour hotline, 995, for its Expatriate Workers Protection and Support Centre. Contact details can change, so confirm them on the LMRA website before you rely on them.
