Prepare for the occupation-specific requirements through official Saudi channels.
Received a Saudi engineering job offer but unsure whether you need Saudi Council of Engineers registration before travelling? Start with the profession your employer plans to put on your visa, not just the job title on the offer letter. The correct SCE route depends on your qualification, engineering category and whether you are applying from India or already living in Saudi Arabia.
This guide explains the official overseas registration route, the documents worth preparing, the difference between professional accreditation and an Iqama profession change, and the questions to settle with HR before paying a fee. Source review: 31 October 2026.
The Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) is the professional body responsible for engineering accreditation in Saudi Arabia. Its official Professional Accreditation Guide describes registration as the process of checking qualifications and relevant professional experience before an applicant enters the council’s professional record. Professional classification into higher grades is a separate assessment.
For Indian candidates, the important distinction is that a job offer, an employment visa, SCE membership and the occupation shown on a Saudi Iqama are related but not interchangeable approvals. An employer may need more than one of them before you can legally hold a particular engineering occupation.
If your Saudi employer intends to hire you into a regulated engineering occupation, ask whether SCE accreditation is required for that exact occupation code. The council’s 2024 guide describes separate educational categories for engineers, engineering technologists, architects and architectural technologists. Other technical and technician services have their own routes; do not assume a diploma makes you eligible for the engineer category.
Yes, there is an official service for applicants outside Saudi Arabia. The Saudi National Platform lists an SCE service for joining the engineer, technical engineer or architect category from outside the Kingdom, intended to support the visa process. It directs applicants to the council’s professional-accreditation registration page. This is not the same as an ordinary membership renewal for a Saudi resident.
See the Saudi National Platform overseas registration service. Its listing includes a published service cost of SAR 500 and an indicative five-working-day service period. These are not a guarantee of your complete approval time or total membership bill; academic verification and individual document checks may take longer.
The SCE engineering-category guide specifically refers to identity or border-number information, passport, employment reference letter, academic record, a signed declaration/authorisation and verification or equivalency of qualifications obtained outside Saudi Arabia. The exact upload checklist depends on the service and category.
Before uploading, compare the spelling of your name, university, degree title, graduation year and specialisation across every document. If something differs, resolve it with the issuing institution or SCE rather than altering documents yourself.
The Saudi National Platform’s engineering-category registration listing and overseas service listing each show SAR 500 as a service cost. They do not establish that every applicant’s entire membership, verification, classification and examination cost is SAR 500. Fees and available membership periods can differ by category and service, so rely on the current SCE invoice.
The National Platform lists five working days as the service duration for these registration listings. Treat that as a service indication, not a promise that university verification, visa processing or all subsequent approvals will finish in five days. Do not book non-refundable travel solely on that estimate.
No. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) has a separate Change Expatriate Profession service through Qiwa. Its official conditions say that a valid SCE professional practice certificate is required when changing to an engineering profession. The authorised employer or establishment representative makes the request, subject to eligibility conditions.
This matters if your offer says ‘mechanical engineer’ but the planned visa or existing Iqama has a different occupation. Ask the employer to explain the compliant sequence. Do not assume SCE approval automatically corrects the residency record, or that any engineering occupation can be assigned regardless of localisation rules.

An official overseas registration route exists for eligible applicants outside the Kingdom. Whether you can complete it before receiving a visa or border number depends on the current service and your category. Start with the overseas SCE service rather than assuming you need an Iqama for every stage.
Not every technician uses the engineer route. The National Platform separately lists an overseas technician service. Confirm whether your actual occupation is covered and which credential category is required.
Do not apply a blanket five-year rule to every category or professional grade. SCE distinguishes initial registration from classification and advancement. Older and category-specific guidance can differ, so ask the council to confirm the rule for your precise qualification, nationality and application route before paying.
An examination can be relevant to particular assessments or professional grades. The SCE guide describes professional examinations within the classification framework. Check the requirement shown for your own application rather than booking an exam simply because another candidate took one.
Use your official SCE account and application reference to review any pending requests. If your university is being contacted for verification, allow for that separate step. Avoid creating duplicate applications without instructions from SCE.
Ask HR to confirm the exact occupation, SCE category, expected accreditation stage, responsibility for official fees and the proposed travel date. Then compare those answers with the official service. A legitimate employer should be able to explain the difference between qualification checks, the employment contract and the residency process.
