Gulf Work Visa Process: What Indian Job Seekers Should Check

Organized travel and employment documents beside a passport and folder

There is no single work-visa process that applies to every Gulf country or every type of job. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain have their own systems, and requirements can also depend on the occupation and the worker’s circumstances. Treat online checklists as a starting point, not as a substitute for current official instructions.

Confirm the job before focusing on the visa

Check that the employer is genuine and that the written offer clearly identifies the position, salary, location and key employment conditions. If a recruiter handles the process, verify the agent’s credentials independently. Do not assume that a visa-related message or payment receipt proves the job itself is legitimate.

Check the official process for the destination

Use the relevant government portal or embassy/consulate guidance for the destination country. For example, Saudi Arabia’s official government portal explains work-visa services and required steps, while the UAE government describes its employment offer, contract and work-permit process.

Keep your documents consistent

Check your passport validity, name spelling, profession, employer details and other information against the application instructions. Depending on the destination and role, the process may involve medical examinations, qualifications, biometrics, attestations or professional approvals. Follow the current official checklist rather than relying on a forwarded message.

Review the contract and India-side requirements

Keep a copy of the signed employment agreement and compare it with the offer you accepted. Indian nationals should also check whether emigration clearance or other requirements apply to their passport category and destination. The Ministry of External Affairs provides overseas-employment guidance and information about registered recruiting agents.

Read the MEA overseas-employment FAQs.

Before travelling

  • Verify the employer and recruitment agent.
  • Understand salary, accommodation, transport, medical cover and other written terms.
  • Confirm the visa category and current official steps.
  • Keep copies of your passport, visa, contract and important contact details securely.
  • Do not travel on the assumption that a visit visa automatically authorises employment.

If any detail is inconsistent or unclear, pause and contact the relevant authority or Indian mission. Requirements change; verify them again close to your travel date.

Track your work-visa application without relying on screenshots

After the employer begins the process, keep a simple record of each stage. The names of permits, portals and approval steps differ between Gulf countries, occupations and applicant circumstances, so do not treat another person’s timeline as a guarantee for your case.

  • Record the employer’s legal name, your job title and the official application or reference number, if one is issued.
  • Ask which authority or official portal handles the next step and who is responsible for submitting it.
  • Check status using the official portal or verified employer contact; do not rely solely on a forwarded screenshot or a third-party “visa checker.”
  • Keep copies of the signed offer, contract, receipts and official messages in a secure location.
  • Confirm that the job title, employer, work location and contract details are consistent across documents before travelling.
  • Ask what remains outstanding and what action, if any, is required from you. Do not book non-refundable travel solely on an informal promise.

Protect your documents and personal data

Share identity documents only through a verified and necessary process. Never share passwords or one-time verification codes. If an agent says an application is approved, confirm the status through the relevant official channel and make sure the document is valid for the specific employment and travel purpose.

This guide focuses on tracking the application and verifying status after the process begins. For the separate question of which terms should appear in the written employment agreement, read our Gulf employment contract checklist. Always confirm current requirements with the destination authority.
